The Rhode Island Red is named after the state in which it was developed in the late 1800s. It was give the title of the state bird for Rhode Island in 1954. This bird was develope for utility purposes and is good for both egg and meat production. However, there remarkable dark mahogany color with shimmer green tones put them in the show ring with poultry fanciers. The Rhode Island Red was developed by crossing native birds of Rhode Island with Brown Leghorns, Cochins, Brahmas, and Red Malays. The Red Malay breed is credited for giving the Rhode Island Red their remarkable mahogany color. The Rhode Island Red was accepted into the American Poultry Association in 1904.

The Rhode Island Reds in the photos above are of the Mohawk Line. The Mohawk Line of Rhode Island Reds is an old show line developed by Mr. Robert Blosls of Virginia. The particular birds in the photo belong to one of our Members, Mr. Paul Gingerich of Berthoud Colorado. HPBAA is happy to have Paul as a Member and appreciative of his work in helping to preserve the Rhode Island Reds.
