The Bourban Red Turkey is an older American variety that was developed in Pennsylvania and Kentucky in the late 1800's. A cross of the Buff, Bronze, and White Holland makes up this breed. The Bourban Red is a large Heritage breed with excellent utility traits. This bird has a heavy breast, light colored pin feathers for a clean carcuss, and richly flavored meat.
The Bourban Red is a docile mild mannerd bird and an excellent forager. Their contrasting chestnut red plumage laced in black and highlighted by white on the wing and tails make these birds extremely eye catching. This bird is extremely popular for show due to it's ability to catch the eye of the judge when in good condition. They were accepted into the American Poultry Association in 1909.
