The Silver Appleyard Duck is in the Heavy class of ducks. This breed was developed in the 1930's by Mr. Reginald Appleyard. Mr. Appleyard was an English waterfowl enthusiast who wanted a duck with excellent production of meat and eggs. After much breeding, this breed turned out to be an excellent ornamental as well. The color of this breed is similar to that of a Mallard but with a lighter silvery tint in drakes and a light silvery brown tint in hens.
These ducks were first brought to the United States in 1960s. They are referred to as Silver Appleyards here in the US. Although these ducks have a calm temperament, lay large white eggs, have flavorful meat that is not to fatty, and are the choice for small flock owner's their conservation status is critical. Having been admitted to the American Poultry Association in 1998, this critical status will hopefully change. The ducks in the photos to the left belong to Mr. Bill Braden of Land of Tobe Poultry in Oklahoma.
